Just yesterday I was having a discussion with a professional in the field of public relations and marketing. We were talking about the development of the brochures to promote Villisca. As it is always so, the unsolved 1912 Ax Murders came up. Include them or not? If so, where in the brochure? What is the purpose of the brochure? Villisca cannot run away from its history. The dilemma is how to deal with it in an appropriate manner.
It seemed timely that this morning I received an e-mail with the link to a blog they thought I should read. I did and it renewed my belief that this is a subject that can be dealt with with care and sincerity. The blog I was referred to is found at http://laurajames.typepad.com/clews/2006/10/villisca_true_c.html
I might argue about us being a quiet town but otherwise, we are indeed a town that has survived a terrible event and there are many positive things about life here that came from the community's struggle of dealing with the murders. Those are things we can celebrate.
